Saturday, April 16, 2011 — Justus Steel “Shockwave Magazine” 2010

So I can tell you that Always Better Tomorrow, Willow Morris, and the Vista Saints played. Some of them seemed to fit on the bill at least. Then came local heroes, Silvertung. I have to say as much as these guys are ingrained in the Baltimore music scene, and as much as I hear about them from their supporters, I have never caught them playing a set of originals. And to be honest I was kind of nervous that I might have to review them. I knew that since they are such a part of the scene, they should be reviewed in Shockwave. And I knew when the time was right, it would happen. But I also knew that I should not be the one to do it. Which is why I was nervous. I don’t beat around the bush when it comes to reviews, and I didn’t want to have to say bad things about these guys. So with some worry, I watched them take the stage.

The first song, “Coming Alive,” and kinda the next one they played too, were very vocal driven. They were alright songs, but sorta had an 80′s hairband feel with the guitar sound (pedal settings and mix volumes) and the fact that the guitar seemed behind the vocals. I also noticed that Speed (singer) did his thing where he hits himself in the head. It’s cool, but it was a little overdone. Then something happened when they started the third song, “Lies.” The overdone head shots settled down, and the sound mix that sounded a bit 80′s rockish suddenly took a big leap forward in time. The guitar sound got crunchy, just like I like it. The vocals weren’t so dominant. It felt like the vocals went with the music instead of overpowering it. And it just got better from there. Usually I can only take one or two songs that I’ve never heard before in a row. Then I get bored. But the set just kept getting better. It was so easy to get into it.

While Speed may be easy on the eyes for the ladies, these guys are easy on the ears for everyone. And don’t let me get started on “Deja Vu.” Who’s droppin the ball and not playing this song on the radio? A bunch of f’n morons, that’s who. All I can really say is WOW. Silvertung f’n rocks. Great set. Blew me away.
